'Over the Rainbow' is a song for the filmmusic 'The wizzard of Oz' from 1939 and was interpreted for the first time by Judy Garland. It is part of our collective awareness, that somewhere over the rainbow there is a land, where all our wishes are fullfilled. It also is a continuation of the myth of the rainbow as bridge between the divine realm and the human world.
In the late 1970s, the rainbow banner became a symbol of the gay and lesbian movement.
This universal symbol of hope obtains another significant level in Mircea Cantor's version. Each colour bow is made with the artist's fingerprints, applied on the wall by himself. The shape reminds of a barbed wire and the many boundaries that limit our personal freedom.
