Initially in 2003, 'Bosnian Girl' by Šejla Kamerić was put up as a public poster in her hometown Sarajevo as a reminder of the Srebrenica genocide. From July 11 to 19, 1995, towards the end of the Bosnian War (1992-1995), over 8,000 people of the Bosniak ethnic minority were killed in the Srebrenica area by the Army of Republika Srpska (Vojska Republike Srpske, VRS) led by Ratko Maldić, the police and Serb paramilitaries.
Tate Modern presents the work from its permanent collection in one of the 13 rooms of 'Art and Society'. Already in 2011, the Art Collection Telekom acquired an edition of the work.
