Ukrainian artist Olesia Saienko tells stories not with words or language but with the medium of photography and video. She can build on the vast archive of images and memories that have been stored in our inner imagination and thinking since the depictions of the real and the virtual have been reproduced millions of times in social media. She employs her own photographs as building blocks of her narratives. They are unusual. They are distinguished by stillness and mystery and stand out for their sheer beauty. Silent about what they might show, they connect with each other to form invisible strands into which the narratives are inserted. Stories that the viewers tell themselves in their own thinking, in their own imagination.
The gnawed apple could be a symbol of mortality - a motive for vanitas. But, it seems, the artist does not like to taste the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.
Olesia Saienko lives and works in Ivano-Frankivsk. She has a master's degree in psychology and also studied at the NGO Center for Visual Education in Lutsk in 2019.
