'PROXIMITY' is the first solo exhibition in Italy by artist Radenko Milak.
The exhibition is the result of an iconographic research project that Radenko Milak undertook in Rome during his residency at Fondazione D’ARC last spring. His research focuses on a symbolic universe infused with pop sensibilities and iconic imagery, drawing on the histories of cinema, mass communication and music. These references are interwoven with imaginative evocations of vernacular imagery commonly found in mass-produced prints and Roman souvenirs.
Radenko Milak’s artistic practice finds its distinctive expression in painting, and particularly in black-and-white watercolour. This choice of medium and visual language strips the subject of its documentary status, placing it instead within a suspended temporality that lends it a more universal dimension.
Alongside his paintings, Radenko Milak presents, for the first time, a large-scale installation entitled 'Umbra ante Memoriam'. The work uses Fondazione D’ARC’s monumental stained-glass window as a paradigm for a metalanguage in which the window becomes, tautologically, a privileged filter for both vision and its negation.
The exhibition is curated by Giuliana Benassi.
