The MSU - Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje presents ‘Igor Grubić: Gestures of Activation - Works in Public Space’, an exhibition that was presented at the MMSU in Rijeka in 2024.
The retrospective exhibition of Igor Grubić's works in public space brings together works in a wide range of formats - from minimal gestures in the form of text, photography or performance to projects aimed at non-artistic goals. Public engagement is a central motif in Igor Grubić's work, which is emphasized by both his first retrospective exhibition in Rijeka and the current solo exhibition in Skopje.
Igor Grubić deals with the social upheavals of the 1990s, paying particular attention to the processes of transition and privatization, the burden of war destruction and the responsibility of the individual in actively shaping positive social change. In this sense, his critically oriented reflections are closely linked to the strengthening of civil disobedience and the application of various activist strategies of agitation and infiltration in the public space. By penetrating the soft fabric of a pacifist but rousing critique, Igor Grubić embodies a particular example of artistic activism that is indebted to the spirit of guerrilla and anarchist actions and continues the legacy of the historical avant-gardes and conceptual practices of the 1960s and 1970s - those currents that, by taking to the streets, practiced institutional critique and expressed a desire for direct communication with the public.
The exhibition at MSU Skopje was co-curated by Vladimir Jančevski (MSU Skopje) in collaboration with Branka Benčić, Kora Girin and Sabina Salamon (MMSU Rijeka).
