Mircea Nicolae, the artist name of Ionuț Cioană, has been among the younger generation of Romanian artists who experienced life under dictatorship and lived through the era of revolution as children. His works have been exhibited in the PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the ZKM Karlsruhe, the MUSAC in León, and the Motorenhalle in Dresden.
Mircea Nicolae is a keen observer of the changes to the Bucharest cityscape. For example, he documents the advent and disappearance of small kiosks, the businesses of the first private entrepreneurs in the years immediately following the revolution. They became irrelevant as the international supermarket chains arrived.
