Kateryna Lysovenko was born in Odesa in 1989. She studied at the Grekov Art School in Odesa, the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, and the Academy of Media Arts in Kyiv. In 2022, Kateryna Lysovenko fled Ukraine with her two children and has lived in Vienna ever since. Against the backdrop of the tragic conflict in her home country, her intensely colourful paintings, drawings, and murals explore themes such as ideological labelling, power and powerlessness, loss, and trauma.
Her work has been presented twice at the Venice Biennale. Compared with her earlier works, which are characterised by darker, opaque tones. The colours in her more recent paintings have transformed into a luminous palette of great lightness and transparency. Hybrid creatures and ghostly beings, appearing like coloured shadows, emerge within these transparent pictorial spaces. Some of the works transform personal experiences of migration, alienation, and of being made into an outsider into poetic images of vulnerability. Birds appear—migratory birds striving to overcome gravity. Home is carried into foreign places like the house of a snail.
